    American Temperance Society, however, marked the triumph of a more rigorous position, which required of its members total abstinence from distilled liquor. Because distilled liquors did not exist in biblical times, but only the less potent fermented beverages, temperance leaders did not feel any conflict between their creed and biblical example.   Temperance can include moderation and abstinence, but it is more than either one.
